  1. I came up with this easy solution to NHL realignment, considering they would most likely keep an 82 game schedule.

With 2 conferences broken down to 2 divisions each, one 8 team division , one 7 team division, this 82 game schedule would work out great.

    7 team division:
Play the other 6 teams in your division 6 times each, 3H 3A = 36 divisional games.
    Within conference, opposing division (8 teams) 2 games each, 1H 1A = 16 games.
    Play the other conference (15 teams) 2 games each, 1H 1A = 30 games
That gives you 52 conference games (36+16) and 30 games v other conference totaling 82 games.

    8 team division:
    Play 4/7 teams within your division 5 times, with 2/4 being 3H 2A and the other 2/4 being 2H 3A = 20 games
Play the remaining 3 teams in your division 6 times, 3H 3A = 18 games
    20+18=38 divisional games.
    Within conference, opposing division (7 teams) 2 games each, 1H 1A = 14 games.
    Play the other conference (15 teams) 2 games each, 1H 1A = 30 games
That gives you 52 conference games (36+16) and 30 games v other conference totaling 82 games.

Every team would play 52 conference games and 30 out of conference games. The two 8 team divisions would play 2 more divisional games than the 7 team division, but the same amount of conference games considering the 2 game differential would be “made up” when you play the 7 team division within the conference, because you’d play 14 whereas the 7 team divisions play 16. Works perfect.
